Now that the holiday season has passed and it's time to hit the books at school again; it's time to get your reluctant and holiday-lovin' kids back on the back-to-school track. It's no secret that kids need good nutrition to fight illnesses and grown up strong and healthy; but there are also some need-to-have brain boosting foods that can help your kids do better in school.
1. Whole grains help with keeping an even glucose level through the day. We all know the benefits of whole grains on many but did you know that it will also keep their energy levels up and help with lengthening their attention spans? Something as simple as ditching the white bread in their sandwiches and opting for one of the many whole grain breads will help boost their brain power.
2. Yogurt is a yummy source of both Vitamin B as well as protein. Adding a little bit of yogurt with berries and/or granola into their regular snack times or simply including yogurt in their lunches will help the growth of brain tissues.
3. Adding eggs into their regular diet will add the benefits of choline. Choline is an important nutrient that is vital for good brain development as well as aiding in proper nerve function. Remember to always feed your child breakfast. Studies have shown that kids who have a proper breakfast are less apt to get in trouble and do better in school. If your kid won't eat them, try making them a yummy french toast. Quick and easy and they'll love it while getting all the egg benefits!
4. Keeping your kids healthy is number one for parents. Berries, while loaded with Vitamin C to help keep your child's immune system healthy and functioning well, also have high levels of antioxidants. Fruits such as berries also contain tons of antioxidants which are great memory-boosting brain food!
5. While many schools are not allowing nut products to be sent in lunches and snacks, don't forget these great snacks while your child is at home. Good fats contained in the nut butters, such as almond, peanut and cashew, are essential for brain development and overall health. Try to stay away from the ones that are high in hydrogenated , trans fats or loaded up with sugar.
