Jury Finds All Three Family Members Guilty Of Murder
Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13 along with a woman they considered a second mother, Rona Mohammad Amir, 52, were found dead in the family's Nissan.
Jurors have returned with a verdict of first degree murder for all three Shafia family members in a trial which has shocked and horrified many.
Mohammad Shafia and his wife Tooba Yahya, along with their eldest son Hamed have been found guilty in the planned extermination of four family members, three of which were their children.
Three teens, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13 along with a woman they considered a second mother, Rona Mohammad Amir, 52, were found dead in the family's Nissan which was submerged in the shallow water of the Rideau Canal on June, 2009.
The Judge speaking of the crimes has described them as "despicable" and "heinous". He went on to say that "the apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honour...that has absolutely no place in any civilized society".
The guilty verdict followed approximately 15 hours of deliberation; less than 48 hours after the jurors were handed the case. They were each handed an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
